THE LIGHTNING BROTHERS -These totemistic figures represent ancestral spirits called the “Lightning Brothers” and are situated in a rock shelter near Delamere. There are many stories about the origin of lightning. Myths of Western Arnhemland describe the “Lightning Man” as bashing in the beams of the “sun Women” until the onset of the wet season, when he would ride the clouds that moved in from the sea to watch over his people. When he saw evil being done his voice would his and crackle, and he would hurl his spear in a steak of fire, sometimes splitting a tree and sometimes striking dead an evil-doer as a lesson to his people.

MIMI SPIRITS -There are two groups of Aboriginal spirits beings, the aggressive demon Namandi, and the shy usually harmless Mimi, who hide at the approach of living aborigines. Mimi Spirits live and hunt in the same way as aborigines, though hunting only takes place on calm days as Mimi are extremely delicate. Often depicted as stick figures, Mimi Spirits occur throughout Australia as rock and bark paintings, with the best examples in Northern Australia.

SUN WOMAN / MOON MAN Legend - The Sun is the woman. She ran away from her tribe because the elder refused to let her marry the man she loved. Her guardian spirits felt sorry for her, and lifted her to a quiet spot in the sky world. She was lonely, but refused to return to her people below. She saw that they were sad that she had gone, and wanted to help them, so she built up a campfire to warm her people during the day and let it die down at night when her people were able to sit by their own fires. She saw her people were happy so decided to do this forever.
The Moon is the man. Japara was a hunter and one day whilst he was away Parukapoll became friendly with his wife and told her amusing stories. Japara’s infant son fell into a stream and was drowned and when he returned from the hunt he was very angry with his wife for not watching out for their son. So he killed his wife and then fought Parukapoll to the death. The tribe told Japara that he shouldn’t have killed his wife and Japara was full of remorse. The spirit guardians had taken his wife and son to the sky world and they decided to take Japara too. They told him that his wife and little boy were in the sky world and that as punishment he would have to search the skyworld for them. The moon is a reflection of Japara’s campfire and it changes as Japara is always on the move looking for his wife and son.

MOON & NAUTILUS Legend - This dreaming legend from the Arnhemland explains that the moon when not visible descends into the sea and becomes a nautilus shell, to rise again, rested and bright for all people to admire. This timeless legend no doubt answered the perennial question of children “but where has the moon gone?”
X-RAY ART - Peculiar to western Arnhemland, aborigines accentuated a silhouette of barramundi, kangaroos and other animals with fine parallel lines depicting the internal structure and organs of the animal. Thus this art form is known as X- Ray art. This painting style gives the aboriginals “magical control” over game to ensure a successful hunt and to increase the number of totem animals by distributing the life-essence of the ancestral spirit-being the painting represents.
